Letters to Photography
Notes is a artist-led Scottish periodical devoted to developing visual and critical discourses in contemporary photography. Its goals are to represent, examine and nurture Scottish photography thinking and practice through a dynamic, inquisitive and exploratory process.
Today, it is easier to say what photography isn’t than to try to describe what it is. In this third issue of NOTES, we consider just some of photography's many expressions, with portfolios from Ben Soedira, James Parker, Rachel Fermi, and Natalie Feather. Written contributions include a conversation between Erica Eyres and Ambera Wellmann about the crossover between Wellmann's painting and Instagram practices; Nathanial Gardner’s short essay unpacks some of the social implications of an image by Kent Klich; and Anthony Schrag muses on the masculinity implicit in James Parker’s portfolio, which documents his journey from Edinburgh, Scotland, to the outer reaches of Russia. Book reviews in this issue courtesy of Eszter Biró who has an early look at Sarah Amy Fishlock’s yet unpublished book "Beloved Curve”; and Sarah Irving shares her thoughts on the book “A Beach” by Swedish duo B-B-B-Books. Our Page 1 image comes from a collaboration between visual artists Christine Goodman and Daniele Sambo.
